I started from the nasty layby A458 near Sylfaen Halt. The road is like a straight section of a Grand Prix circuit with frustrated motorists taking their opportunity to overtake. Take care. Nice walk up hill, past house then almost double back on yourself and use tracks across golf course. Just one narrow fairway to cross near top. Lovely views again on a fine blustery day.

Revisit for a proper trig log after having passed by on Glyndwr's Way in 2008. Borderline slightly damaged condition with the patches of concrete flaked away from the top. Nice sunny afternoon, best day for quite some time.

Left bike by Sylfaen Station and followed footpath up hill to golf course. This section under the welcome shade of trees on another very hot day. Didn't see any golfers until I was nearly back to footpath. Take your pick of tracks and edge of fairways to pillar. plenty of opportunity to enjoy the views. Near disaster on return to bike as although the key turned easily in the lock the cable wouldn't disengage! Walked 200 yards to nearby farm and found a hacksaw (no one around). At this moment I was relieved at how quickly I sawed through, but worrying for how poor security it had provided!

Drove up to Clubhouse. A sign says non-members welcome to visit the Café/Bar. Occupants were only too happy to let me park there and competed with each other to tell me the best route to the trig. Had a nice coffee whilst there. Superb view from Trig, especially towards Long Mountain and Moel Y Golfa which I had just been up. Really a Marilyn bagging day but with the bonus of a couple of Trigs.

The pillar is situated on the summit of a fern and gorse clad Marilyn that it shares with a golf course; the vegetation reverts to grass in the immediate vicinity of the pillar. Its top surface is flaking slightly; it has an asphalt plug and FB S9900. The hill was accessed by means of Glyndwr’s Way from where its diversion crosses the minor road to the northwest. The ascent offers good views to the north across the green hills of northern Montgomeryshire. A buzzard was circling the hill as I followed the path as it skirted the summit on the way to the trig. There was a huge view in all directions from the top. Relatively nearby to the south the wooded ridge of Upper Park in the Powis Estate displayed an impressive range of autumnal colours as did the woods on the slopes of the Long Mountain to the southeast; the Breiddens were shrouded in thin cloud beyond Yr Allt to the east with a rainbow rising from the Severn Valley close by. Innumerable other mountains and ridges came into or disappeared from view as the changeable weather moved across the landscape; these including some of the lower, rounder green hills of the Welsh Borders, the Berwyn and Cambrian Mountains and some of the peaks of Snowdonia.

It was probably off to Barmouth, but crossed the road and drove straight at me while I was walking back down the main road. Pillar is in the rough above the fairways.
