A re-visit...On open grassy stretch about 150 metres north of the road, generally amongst hearth with scattered beautiful golden gorse bushes. The nearby car park had closed and padlocked barriers, so I had no option but to park on the verge to avoid being too much of a hindrance to traffic. Though the road was fairly wide, my parking, before I'd left the car produced angry horn blast from the next passing car, and as I walked 60 to 70 metres back along the road before heading through the gorse to the pillar, a New Forest warden drove by in her van, stopped and asked me if that was my car on the verge. 'Yes,' I said, 'I'd've parked in the car park nearby but it's entrance is barred and padlocked.' ’We close a very small number of the car parks during the ground nesting birds season. I would've put a note on your windscreen about not parking on the verges, but I won't since I've spoken to you'... 'I wouldn't have done it if the car park had been open. Wouldn't it be wise just to give the judgment that people will be wise and considerate to ground nesting birds if they're still using the car park during this spring season?' ’We can't rely on a lot of people being sensible and balanced, & considerate at this time of year.' 'Well that's a bit of a controversial debate isn't it... And will cause occasional parking on the verge.' 'There are about 120 other car parks around the new forest area' 'Yes, but that's not convenient for this particular place, where the car park is, near the trig pillar, is it????

8/13 on a New Forest trigbagging weekend. Couldn’t park in close car park as closed due to nesting birds, so pulled into end of road opposite car park (to Scouts) and walked back along road till in line with pillar. Then over heath on track. Trig is in good condition with spider and FB intact.

Very beautiful area, open countryside on the New Forest National Park, great to go walking, however avoid when very wet as everywhere gets flooded really easily.

Walked from Bealieu Road station along the fringes of the heath to find this remote and very soggy pillar. Great location though.

About a mile east of Beaulieu Road Railway Station. Difficult to see from the road. Car park about two hundred metres east of the pillar. Barrier was closed, not sure if that was because of the time of day or another reason. Open heathland views. A few ponies about at the time.

Another locked car park meant pulling into the side of the road and putting my hazards on again. This actually became a bit of a theme for today's New Forest trigspedition. Kept to the tracks and away from the vegetation so as not to disturb any ground-nesting birds. Pillar was easily found, and in a particularly pretty patch of flat gorse-strewn plain.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 25th Nov 1939 costing £4.11s.3d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SU31/T159 during 1942. Levelled for height to class 1 precision at tertiary standards in 1959. Last maintained by the OS in 1977. SITE VISIT: Parked in handy car park 150m E and dodged small ponds, the trig is visible from the car park. Replacements asphalt cap, other than that, vgc. Flush bracket facing E, compass measurement 85°. All sight holes intact, the flush bracket looks to have been attempted to be painted. Trig on its own little island today!

I used the parking area a little to the east and walked the 100 metres or so across a very wet heath. There’s a ‘big sky’ here and on a clear day like today, you can see across the countryside for miles. The pillar is in generally good condition although the centre plug has been replaced with a bitumen filler.

On our way back from staying near Lyndhurst (again) we went that liitle bit further and bagged this one with another young trigger. Not much to talk about with the view other than very flat and wet. Trig in good condition cap missing, looks as if it might have been painted white at some time in its life.

Pillar stands on a low mound. Close to the Forestry Commission's Yew Tree Heath car park.

The trig pillar, looking towards Ferny Crofts On the floor to the right of the pillar is a piece of rope tied in some kind of boy scout knot - pretty appropriate really as Ferny Crofts (in the background behind the trees) is a Hampshire Scouting centre.

Quick grab while staying at nearby scout campsite. Knew It was visible from the road so didn't bring map with me! As I try to spot the lines to Lyndhurst and Dibden Purlieu (no chance). The line to Beaulieu Heath can only be viewed if one of the TPs is towered. Concrete Plug. All four drainage holes open, but full of rubbish. Had the addition of two stones on top of the piller (left in place).

Writing this in Aug 2018. Just dug out an old map and found notes on a few trigs I did in 1998. Vaguely remember bagging this and its nearest easterly neighbour, but my map notes just record date and time and no other details. I think I was recording all that stuff in a blue notebook, sadly now lost.

Circular walk from Beauleigh Road station - wide open heath. Biggest problem was persuading the Old Man not to take the straight line route to the pub and thus miss the trig!
