Highly visible pillar with straight forward access from public footpath passing close by. I parked at the car park to the south near the canal at Buttington Cross. Walked up lane and then used footpath along edge of ridge. Some slight damage to the top of the pillar but still retains an original plug. A very nice viewing point.

The pillar was reached by a one mile walk up a lane (part of the cross-country course at my old school) and a footpath from the car park next to the lime kilns (where we used to stop for a cigarette) at Buttington Wharf. It is sited on a grassy summit of a long ridge; the top eastern and northern corners are missing and there is cracking around the other corners; it has a metal cap with shallow letters and FB S4755. The Long Mountain can be seen over the trees to the southeast; Rodneys Pillar sits on top of the Breidden Hills to the east (the well known secret masts at Criggion are now gone); the Severn/ Vyrnwy flood plain disappeared into the haze to the northeast. To the northwest beyond the village of Guilsfield, Gaer-fawr Hill, other small hills and the Berwyn Mountains can be seen. The view to the west is blocked by a nearby tree, but on returning to the car a hazy view opened out up the Severn Valley and over Welshpool to Y Golfa and the wooded hill of the Powis estate.
