Parked in layby in thick fog and headed over the open access land, hard going and lots of bogs, headed back to the road and walked up the road for a few minutes to an old track - nice and easy walk up from there. I would imagine the views are stunning but today was just fog fog and more fog. Nice trig with plaque and in very good condition.

I originally painted this on 29/10/23. That’s when these pictures are from, unfortunately it must have rained before the paint completely dried and it ruined the finish, I only realised when I saw a picture on here ! So I went back up on Friday cleaned it up and repainted it. From what I’ve read this is a listed monument because of the commemorative plaque that was attached in 1946

This trig can be easily 'bagged' by parking at the roadside for a very short walk. We visited it during a 13 mile hike starting at The Roaches. This trig is very close to MOD controlled land and sits atop Merryton Low, one of the Peak District 'Ethels'. It is grade 2 listed and bears a plaque commemorating four members of the local home guard who lost their lives on active service in the regular army during WW2. It is in generally good condition albeit the original centre for the spider has been replaced with a plain disc. The views are reasonable and improve dramatically not to far away from the site of the pillar.

The best of 3 visited today on a pedal from Buxton, this is 3/3 and superb views and location. It is named after the pond located on the downside of the road in between the trig and what used to be a pub, The Mermaid. Legend goes she rejected a lover who then accused her of been a witch. She was drowned here at Blake Mere pond, but not before she had put a curse on the ex lover. He died a day or two afterwards, his body found at the pond, it is haunted and often known locally as the Mermaid's Pond. Full of sludge, so avoid swimming in it or upsetting the mermaid. Today is VE day and the three trigs are dedicated to every person whose lost a life in any battle/war.

Getting late, decided to thumb it to get back to the car in Earl Sterndale, something I haven't done in years. First lift with huge wagon to main road, driver was formerly a sheep farmer in Brecon Beacons and missed it, but bills had to be paid. Second lift took me very kindly to my car, bloke worked servicing coffee machines covering a huge area, he looked knackered and hated the driving. I was very grateful for the lift, and a welcome ending to a tiring but pleasurable day walking and trigging.

Great 360 views with Hen Cloud, The Roaches, Ramshaw Rocks, Shutlingsloe and Tittesworth Reservoir all recognisable on a clear but breezy day. Trig itself is well cared for with a lovely coat of white paint, plaque commemorating 5th Staffs home guard and OS plate indicating it is part of the GPS passive station network.
