Free parking next to the Oakenshaw Wildlife Reserve. Opted for this route due to horses in ROW route. Negotiating the field east from nature reserve proved problematic due to inquisitive young cattle. Relieved to seek the sanctuary of the plantation. Trig located south of woods about 10m into grazing field. Plinth exposed possibly due to cattle congregating. A roundabout return route skirting field boundaries to avoid cattle and horses.

Parked on wide verge, south side of road at NZ216373. Followed mapped RoW so far, then through woods. Tertiary station pillar completed 15th November 1951 costing 23.0s.6d, still in good condition. Assumed to be a replacement for nearby S4210, Ox Close Farm, that pillar being long gone. Smooth brown plug broken open. Flush bracket faces 82 (E) into fence. All sight holes open, innards filled with debris. Open southerly aspect, north lost to woods.

County Durham. Walked up the footpath from the north and came through the woods, returning round the woods to save fence climbing. Not marked on 1:50000 map, but is marked on 1:25000. Plug missing.

Very boggy field to cross en route to pillar...luckily it was still very frosty in places which helped enormously. Small chip off corner of pillar and nibbled in other areas. All four sight holes were open. Plug missing. Although there are 360 degree views from the pillar, the wintery sun and hazy atmosphere meant that we saw very little. Plug missing.

I made a bit of a mess of this one. I parked at the nature reserve, walked south with the intention of then doubling back north east to the trig, but I ended up being blocked by a field of boistrous cattle. Instead I came back up onto the main road and used the footpath that headed south west off the road but it was not that easy to find on the ground. The wood itself was however easy to walk though and the trig just a few meters into the field on the other side of the wood.
