Railing enclosure filled with foliage but the pillar is just visible still. As to the location: When the FBM was originally placed, Washington Avenue (as it is now) was actually part of an extended Piccotts End Lane, which used to come right past at this point following roughly the eastward route of the road, until it finally joined St Agnell's Lane at about where Astley Cooper School is now. The whole area was the Grovehill estate, and this part of Hemel is still known by that name.

Lot's of undergrowth - but nice green railings, just like an FBM should be. Odd that there's an OS GPS plate, and presumably the pillar's been replaced at some point, as this bears little resemblance to the expected name plate and datum.

I'm a bit confused by this one. I set out to find TP0651, a Berntsen, but at the quoted co-ordinates (TL 06617 09488) all I found was an expance of mown lawn in a residential area of Hemel Hempstead. However, about 100ft away I found this and thought I was just a bit out with my co-ordinates. It wasn't until I came to log it that I realised it was a different thing altogether. The Trigpoint:UK database calls it a 'Fundamental Bench Mark' but it looks more like a 'Surface Block'. Its a cement or concrete square with a bronze dome about 3 inches in diameter in the centre of the top surface. Inscribed on the bronze dome is the OS 'Arrowhead' and the letters 'OSBM'. Screwed to one side was a badly deteriorated plate. It seemed to be tthe normal information plate found screwed to T/P's that are now part of the passive network. There was no F/B nor did I notice any 'easily accessible' hight reference mark. It was in a fenced off enclosure and I couldn't get close enough for a thorough examination. Interesting, though.
