OK so now I have an idea.... Time and technology have moved on since my log some years ago and still no-one has managed to bag this one. It strikes me that what we need is one of those little radio controlled helicopters with a camera on it...and someone who can fly it. Any takers?

My first failure of the day. Nobody home with church all locked up so no chance of checking this. Found marking on bell tower but judging by cobwebs on door it has not been opened for a while. May try again

I arrived just too late to ask the keyholder about access to the church tower, so I join the list of failures to find, but I am not calling it unreachable. See http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm24144 for my log of the cut mark on the buttress of the church tower.

Arrived as the churchwarden and her friend were doing the church flowers! She allowed me to climb into the bellringers area but access to the top of the tower where the bolt is was by a vertical wooden ladder not very well attached to the wall and then a complicated trapdoor through to the bells, followed by a similar ladder and trapdoor to the roof. The warden said she wasn't happy about me going up there - and neither was I!!! One day, somebody will come and look at this in addition to logging the benchmark on the tower base!

This is not a bolt. What we have here is the mark (arrow and line rather like on a flush bracket) carved into the Church tower ( about 2 feet above the ground on the corner to the left of the lightning conductor ). The field next to St Marys to the left of the path in the picture is a place we visit annually. The hill overlooks Silverstone circuit and although you can not see the F1 British Grand Prix the view of the pre race Red Arrows display from here is tremendous you can almost touch them as they roar over your head - I suspect they even use the Church atop the hill as a sighting line. So keep it secret but trigpointers are invited for about 1PM (check Red Arrows website)on Sunday 11 July 2004 - beauty is you drive straight in arriving after and leaving before the races traffic jams - bring a picnic.
