A good excuse to go up Blencathra on a glorious sunny day to check out this 'Ordnance Survey Trigonometrical Station' (not 'Triangulation' as on pillars). These concrete rings were used to identify secondary stations, there'll be a concrete block with a bolt underneath the marker, and comprise a concrete ring with a phosphor-bronze ring running through it which can be located with a metal detector. Apparently they were usually buried but the erosion of many feet has exposed this one. The only other example I've seen on TrigpointingUK is Branstree near Appleby in Westmorland. We parked at the Blencathra Centre car park and saw a red squirrel as we were putting our boots on. Fantastic views and a great walk.
