Three more Nuttall's visited on this date - all over virtually pathless moor although on occasions, old and new slate quarry tracks helped. The descent was via the old incline which runs from SH723453 all the way down to the main road at the southern end of the Blaenau, although the initial descent from the summit was over rough moor.

Came up from Cae Clyd via Llyn y Manod, but on the way down got wind and hail-blasted through the quarry instead, then onto the disused incline which gave me a speedy descent to Bethania. A tough afternoon, though worth it for decent views in most directions.

Moot point whether just 'damaged' or 'definitely missing'. Pillar gone, but foundations & centre bolt remain. Either way, a fine mountain. Intensive quarrying adds to the interest. From Manod, take Cae Clyd - becomes footpath up to Llyn y Manod & up onto Manod Mawr. Public. Access Land in Ffestiniog enclave, so not actually within the National Park.

The pillar is demolished but the foundations with the base outline of the pillar is visible. All that remains on the site other than this that is identifiable is one of the brass hooks on a fragment of concrete. The concrete is joined to a piece of natural local stone and I would guess that like several others locally the pillar was constructed of local stone blocks. A bit disappointing to find that this was all that remained after a stiff climb from Blaeneu FFestiniog but the views are superb. The local sheep farmer was met on the way down . He said local vandals had destroyed the pillar soon after construction at least 20 years ago although that perhaps leaves about 30 years leeway.

This is a local hill for me so been there more times than care to remember. I have never remember seeing a trig point there, in the 12 or so years, since about 1993 (but was days before took notice of trigs or had camara!). There is the remains of a pillar there (see pictures - taken 30/5/04), which appeared to be of stone. Of interest is the innards of the trig that is now visible, there is a metal upper center bolt, at the center of sighting holes. The trig remains is surrounded by a ring of stones, when this ring appeared i'm unsure. (my first recorded visit was 21-8-99 14:32) Update: Apperntly the OS have it recorded as destroyed 1/9/97. It also says no FB was ever present.
