Polished bolt sits proudly in the centre of the top of the tower. Amazing views over London and to the south. One can understand why this is a primary station. It was also one of the central points used by Captain Mudge in the first Ordinance survey in the 1790s. He records that he set up the great Theodolite "32 feet from the north-east corner of the Tower and in that direction from it" . No sign of it being there is left, but I suppose not surprising 230 years later!

My GSW guidebook says that you can see 13 counties from the top - the Old Man and I debated how many trigs might be intervisable, and concluded (on no objective basis whatsoever) at least 100. Also looked at the triangular stone next to the bench - not convinced it is a survey point as the workmanship is very crude.

Also a bolt, 1st order, approx 5m ENE, at 307m (ground level is 295m) - which I didnt notice. No mention of the Stone - so arguably you cant log this unless you visit the stud :-). NB the condition of the stud is GOOD. Pharisee (whom I met previous day at Basingstoke FBM) mentioned it was open 10 til 5 so I called in, brandished my NT card and saved a quid. This is a brass stud set into the floor of top of the tower. It’s only accessible when the tower is open to the public; at this time of the year Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. There is a small charge of £1 for the privilege. It’s the highest point for miles around and on a clear day, the view is spectacular. There is also a carved stone set into the ground close to a bench seat adjacent to the tower. This is sometimes mistaken for the survey marker.
