Came up from Inchnadamph lodge where we'd been staying the week. Had planned on continuing to Ben More Assynt but snow on the ridge (with some cornices) made us think better of it and we returned to the lodge. Great views before the cloud rolled in.

Walked up from Inchnadamph then onto BMA. A lot of snow on the saddle between the 2 for May. Retro-bagging this as we weren't doing trigs then so didn't look for the pillar remains, but remember seeing the surface block. Not sure I've given a 9 before, but this one was worth it.

Block in shelter cairn appears to be a recent structure, not a conversion of the original pillar base. I managed to find a chunk of concrete in NW wall of shelter which is presumably a relic of the old pillar if it went in 1977. OS trig archive has Block at 230331.891, 919937.938 (10m N of my recorded waypoint); Maint year 1951; no mention at all of a pillar although there is understood to have been one with FB S5490, converted to Block in 1977. Note: the OS GR is about 10m N of my GPSr reading which was estimated accuracy 3m. The POI file was NC 30343 19940, 16m NE of the Block but no sign there has ever been a trig there - just virgin mountain top. Anyway, as far as S5490 is concerned, I am going for Damaged - Debris would be more accurate. In cloud with strong wind. I was glad not to have to make the traverse to Ben More Assynt although a party I met had somehow done just that. I visited Na Tuadhan (Corbett Top) on the way down - quite a fight in the conditions. A few heavy showers just to add to the fun - what a week!!

My Munro #76 climbed alone. Weather really very poor, however this is a part of the world so remote that if you've set out to get there, then by crikey you're going to do what you set out to do...in this case Conival and BMA, despite lack of views from either of them.

Conival Definitely a block now, not a pillar!

If continuing over BMA and its southern top dont be tempted by the gulleys down to the loch they are not a short cut instead go over the lower summit then take the grassy ridge towards Eagle Crag before heading back

It was a fantastic day - great walk, first-class weather. My log says there was a Red Admiral butterfly at the summit.
