Grade I listed, 1165-7 for Henry II; currently managed by English Heritage. OS lists Bolt and Flagstaff as components. Spoke with staff for turret access but only public access is to the tower roof; in fact I was told there are no stairways to the turrets, a rather long ladder is required! 1:2k5 map puts the Bolt on the NE turret and the FS in centre of roof - perhaps what previous logger 'Dodders' found was base of original FS? There is a flagstaff but looks as though it's atop the SE turret, if so then not what the OS would have sighted to. There is a damaged cut benchmark at E angle of SE turret.

Old Maps 1974 1:2500 map shows a trig symbol at the north end of the castle. The castle was closed today, and from others' logs, the bolt is inaccessible anyway.

Orford Castle Old Maps indicates the bolt is/was on the tower to the right.

Flagstaff (on SE turret, intersected station) intact. From elsworth's 2005 log and my walking around the base with GPS I take it the Bolt is on NE turrett which isn't accessible to public. I was here late eve with thunder threatening. And they had remembered to lock the door.

Opening times for the castle, probably not the NE turret...

As to what I believe may be the Trig is situated on rooftop floor of Orford Castle. It appears to be located on a seemingly damaged plinth in the centre of the floor. This is an interesting castle with nice views too, so well worth a visit.
