The gliding club was busy today so in order to avoid any possible confrontation, I approached this trig from the south, off piste, up through a very steep woodland to the west of the club. It brought me out about 100 metres from the pillar which is in excellent condition. I love the memorial plaque which gives it a bit of character. I continued NE to intercept a PRoW which took me SW to the quaint village of Great Hucklow

Evening... no one around at all. Walked up from the gliding club on their road/track from the south, but close to the summit and trig is a wall. Down to the left, west about 200 metres was, what looked like four sections of newish metal gate like fencing but on getting down to it, it wasn't climbable gate or fence.. And unfriendly private. No public access. sign. So despite it being a Derbyshire hill summit and trig pillar there was no gates or easy way over a well built wall. I went all the way back to the highest point of the wall and it's junction with another wall and bit of fence and with a bit of difficulty gingerly managed to get up on to it and over it.... But not at all happy that this 71 year old with less than good balance nowadays, was put through this difficulty.

Pillar in good condition, except Plug replaced by tarmac (or black concrete?). Pillar also carries Gliding Club plaque "For all our friends who loved this place - Always remembered". On the opposite side of the gliding club field at SK 18300 78702, in the spectator parking & observation area, is a stone-built imitation trig pillar incorporating a collecting box.

Bridgeman got the directions dead right. It means infringing about 150 metres on private land. We went round the gliding club and asked about the plaque. Apparently, quite a few have come to grief and their ashes are scattered near the trig (or so he said!).

Access from north south path across Abney Moor to east. Leave this path and ascent to ladder stile on ridge to west. dont cross this stile but walk south west along by wall to a broken down rusty gate. Cross it and walk almost due west to a gap in the wall. Turn left up a short ascent to reach trig point. Trig point has a plaque on it and is a good view point.

A plaque has been fixed to this pillar by the local gliding club – pic to follow. I must try paragliding sometime; it looks exhilarating.
