Slightly tricky to bag this Trig as it's inside a fort which is closed to the public. The National Trust own the fort and used to offer guided tours, but these have stopped now as a result of Covid. However, a crop spraying manufacturer called MicronAir currently rents the fort and it's possible to just walk in and see if they'll allow you to climb up to the Trig. Luckily, the blokes at the workshop were quite amenable as long as I promised to be careful. The pillar itself has been toppled from the defensive wall and now lies on a grassy slope above MicronAir's workshop. Great views of Sandown Bay and across the Solent to Portsmouth from the high walls. Oddly, there's also a small herd of black goats that roam around inside the fort walls, presumably employed to keep the grass short.

Accessed with support from volunteer at the end of interesting guided tour of Bembridge Fort £4.50 fir non NT members . We saw the toppled, overgrown trig, no brass work remains and ascended the grassy banks of the ‘ store’ on which trig was located. The concrete plinth remains and there’s a small brass dome in its centre, maybe 7 cm diameter and 2.5 cm high with tiny central indent. Great views!

On a tuesday 14:00 NT visit. An interesting 2hr tour of the old fort which includes the upper walls with great views and chance to visit the toppled trig pillar. ( I got the impression the tour doesn't include the upper walls in wet and windy weather) Very sad state with all brasswork removed and only just visible under the encroaching vegetation.

Did the National Trust tour just to get in the find this one. Very sad to find it in such a bad way, on its side. At least it is still here.

One of the Palmerston Follies, completed 1867, built to fortify against a perceived Fench invasion that never happened. Fort is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. On one of the NT's guided tours. NT lease part of the fort to Micron, a manufacturer of crop spraying equipment. It may be possible to blag access during normal working hours. Toppled pillar, with FB and spider gone, looking quite forlorn to one side of a magazine house near enough at the northernmost point of the fort. It's original base, on top of the magazine house, is now a Surface Block.

Visited the fort on guided tour and bagged the trig. It's been in battle and it didn't win.

Visited after making appointment the day before by ringing MicronAir, was advised "I wouldn't usually do this". Great location pillar is toppled and lying a few away from its original location. Views all around. Glad to of been able to get to see this one.

Booked on a tour of the fort, very enjoyable, this one completes all the pillars and was the last of 3 great days on the isle, half the fort is being used as a factory again so pretty sure you could turn up and try your luck in working hours, work beckons so it's back to the grind and planning the next trip.

Restricted access. Telephoned 01983 741020 and spoke to Heather who very kindly allowed me to visit that day, prior to a private guided tour. Once over drawbridge, half left and up steps, to wooden gate with rope closure, top steps right, pass buildings on left and at end, turn left - pillar on ground round corner. Bolt on hillock to left

Pleased to see that the confusion re. the two trigs on this site has been resolved. On our visit I was unaware that there was more than one here and saw the pillar only. Access is not a problem on an official guided tour or possibly, permission at the gate during working hours. Outside of these times access would be impossible or at best, extremely hazardous. It would be hoped that the National Trust would re-instate the pillar but considering the sorry state of same and their contempt for other pillars in their care, this is very unlikely. The guided tour of Bembridge Fort is well worth the £3.50 p.p. Richard is a very knowledgeable and helpful guide as I would imagine, are his colleagues.

FB and spider gone. As of 2010, National Trust tours of Bembridge Fort are on 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the months starting on 20th April 2010. [email protected] I visited Tue pm 20/4/10 - interesting guided tour. For details see my (and others') TP0751 log.
