Easy to spot where CJO had cut out the covering turf - thanks :) Large bolt in block a few inches deep. Unusual to have a concrete ring marking a surface block. Straightforward lane/track up from Pooley Bridge; too hot to take a longer route. I'd forgotten how busy the Lake District can get with late summer visitors.

Coordinates indicate 3m due W of Old Trig. This could mean 3m W of cairn, which seems well established, but my Garmin settled 8m SW of cairn. I trial holed a few depressions , stony ground, quite deep soil, no clues. Also dug a foot down beneath cairn. No OS sketch on wiki page as yet. This one may need precision GPS or good luck... Lovely spot to spend last part of the day anyway. From NW, Roehead roadhead

Just getting my mojo/pace back for running distances and decided to run Lowther Trail Race. Starts/finishes at Lowther Castle and all on new pathways in a very quiet part of the Lakes. It was trail so no big hills and the first timed control was situated on this cairn. That counts for a visit. Most certainly gifted to the very young 5 foot and a "fag end" lass who was at Tebay Services. She drives an articulated lorry (huge) up and down the country with her jaunty little dachshund. Utter disbelief and tons of respect. What a gal.

Good parking at the top of Roehead road and a lovely stroll to the top via a Roman Seat. Surprised to see a limestone scar so close to a classic view of Ullswater. Sat on the cairn and assumed I was near enough.

Took the cairn apart, goes down quite deep to soil and small stones, not possible to excavate that without tools. Got rid of the mass of small stones and rebuilt cairn with just the larger ones making subsequent dismantling much easier. Need a prodder, a pick and a spade for this one!
