Very narrowly missed the 1300 bus from Shishkine so opted for the hike over The String instead of hanging around for the next one. Ground totally sodden after last night's heavy rain and the light rapidly fading. Good time to make a rapid descent to Brodick and the ferry home.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 3rd March 1956 costing £72.11s.3d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS04/T8 in 1956. Levelled for height also in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in October 1978. SITE VISIT: Approached from WSW, leaving the String Road at NR953534, crossing the Machrie Water by stepping stones and climbing NE to gate in extinct electric fence. Thereafter, direct route up west flank of hill to summit. Open grazing top. Pillar in good condition, freshly painted white by Brian Robertson. Spider retains original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces southeast, ~155°. Vented through SW sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view. Descended via more popular but boggy route ESE to the highpoint in String Road at NR977358.

Low cloud base made for a wet walk up to this trig in July. Parked on String Road and walked up. Boggy underfoot. Somebody has recently re-painted this as the surrounding grass still has white gloss on. Shame the trig painter feels the need to obliterate the FB with black gloss. Not necessary.

Parked on The String for a quick walk across to the trig, a short mile each way and 134m of elevation to gain. Tussock grass made it difficult underfoot and boggy at the start and on the flatish top of the hill. Trig is in good condition with fairly fresh coat of white paint; 1 sight hole open; original cap in place. Good views from here into Glen Rosa with Ben Tarsuinn, Cir Mhor and Goat Fell all on display.

There are 17 pillar trigs on Arran. The trig at An Tunna is one of the easiest to get to, just park your car at the top of the string road then climb over old rusty gate and follow quad tracks at the begining and then contour left to trig. Great views of Goatfell and Brodick Bay.
