It would have been easy to access even if the fence was not broken. Farmland is nearby but there are no views to speak of from the pillar which is now alongside a mast. The pillar is in generally good condition and retains the original centre for the spider.

I went to have a look at the Annesley Road pillar on 27 Jan 2008 and, as was indicated earlier, there is indeed some road widening in progress. In fact it's a big job - adding an extra lane to both carriageways of the M1 from Junction 25 to Junction 28, a distance of some 14 miles - and it's scheduled to last about another 3 years. The good news is that, as far as I could ascertain, neither the comms masts nor the pillar are in danger of removal. The area in which they stand was a small patch of scrubby woodland on the South side of the A608. A large tract of land, including some of this area, has been cleared and levelled and it now looks like a medium-sized village with tarmac roads, large parking areas and lots of (temporary-looking) single-storey buildings, the whole lot surrounded by a high, strong chain-link fence. I was just able to walk along a narrow corridor between this fence and the low timber fence at the top of the bank that separates the lay-by on the A608 from the area containing the masts and pillar. From there, using a long zoom lens through the fence, I was able to get a few reasonable photos of the pillar. I then noticed signs of life inside the compound and so I made myself obvious by walking along close to the fence and waving to a chap in a day-glo yellow jacket - clearly part of the security team who were the only people there on a Sunday morning. As it happened, there was also a van being driven from the other side of the compound towards the locked gate, near to the A608. I got there just as the security man was unlocking the gate for the van and, using the courteous approach that has served me so well in the past, I struck up a conversation with him as a result of which I learned that the "village" behind the wire is temporary and will be removed when the job is finished after which the land will be restored to it former semi-wild state. My new-found friend was also kind enough to allow me inside the compound to inspect and photograph the pillar up close, in the normal way, and so I have a few slightly better shots than I got from my previous vantage point. From what I could see and what I was told, I'm pretty confident that S1648 is safe for a good number of years yet.

Another dead easy one, and 2 of 2 for the day (see TP0198). Parked in the layby, walked away from the M1, then doubled back along the little slip road up to the antenna. Past the gate and you can see it. Some rubbish, but otherwise in very good condition. Anyone know why this has a "12" marked on it?

Still half hidden in bushes in grotty little transmitter area in corner of the field. General views and area quite nice though. Can see over to Derbyshire peak district etc if you pick your spot. Trig point not in best view area though! Motorway noise is loud too, J27 is very busy. Some very futeristic looking factories and offices sprung up round here in last few years though!

I had quite an audience to witness me scrambling up the bank to visit this trig that still keeps up its appearances even though it lives in a grotty area.

Climbed a nettled bank from the lay by only to realise there is a track further back from the motorway that a lorry was covering. no condition change in last 17 days. Only realised now having completed the weeks logs that this was trig 750 for me.

Parked in the layby by the M1 access and found the pillar by the mast. It's all intact with the original plug - raised letters [the first one today]. Only the faintest traces of paint. All sightholes closed. You can get a few views over the surrounding area and these would probably be better in winter with the leaves off the trees.
