Back for a few days holiday near my old boyhood stomping ground in D&G. Stopping in the Cally Palace hotel and bagged during the Anwoth circular walk that also took in the Rutherford monument. Great views, especially out over Fleet bay.

VGC pillar atop a good viewpoint across the Fleet Bay. FB faces south-ish with east-ish and north-ish sightholes open. Cap missing with morter-like plug present. Approached over the marked right of way from Gatehouse on Fleet via Trusty's Hill. Odd Pictish carvings there that I laser scanned about 10 years ago! Slightly boggy at the base of Trusty's Hill onto the hill with the trig and two other monuments. I first bagged this one at some point in around 1999. That time I came up from the west via Anwoth Old Kirk (used in some scenes from the Wicker Man film (original, not remake...)). There's also a pivot on Rutherford's Monument

I parked just off the A75 to the south at Boreland Bridge and simply followed tractor track and path through one gate to reach the pillar. Including the pillar there are three markers here - Rutherford's Monument and a Church Memorial Cairn. Pillar is in good condition but the plug has been replaced with a composite type one. Good view point.

Clearly visible from a distance the approach to the trig point is nonetheless quite difficult at the time of year that I visited. The approach path is very overgrown with bracken and gorse - the latter particularly prickly! The trig point shares the small ridge with a millenium monument to all the ministers of Girthorn and Anwoth churches since the reformation, and a large needle type monument erected in 1842 to Samuel Rutherford, a 17th century scholar, religious teacher and minister of nearby Anwoth church. Excellent views from the trig point of the Fleet estuary and Wigtown Bay.

Passed trig from a distance as i travelled back along the A75 from Rugby tour in convoy with the team (we had just got off the ferry from belfast). Due to the speed which we were travelling at i was unable to stop and run up to the trig to get the number. Trig appeared to be in good condition, and was surrounded by two other monuments. from the distance i was away the one appeared to be a war memorial and the other a round pillar (perhaps a toposcope?).
