The trig is the Vane; the Vane is no longer on the observatory, therefore the trig is destroyed. Fail to see how there can be remains left - it's gone. The observatory is a Grade II* listed building; a former windmill, now camera obscura, it dates from the 18thC, sometime earlier than 1777 when it was recorded as being damaged by fire. Conveted to an observatory 1828.

A good viewpoint. The vane is missing and I am uncertain how it could be reinstated without interfering with the camera obscura.

The Observatory stands on a grassy hill top in Clifton Down above the Avon Gorge in the west of Bristol. No vane could be seen on the building at the time of my visit. My exploration of this corner of The Downs started from the road named Clifton Down to the north of the Observatory. The area has fine views of the city, the Clifton Suspension Bridge and of the gorge. The building is a little run down but there are fantastic views from the top floor of the tower which can also be viewed on the camera obscura that it houses. A tunnel inside the building leads to St Vincentís or Ghystonís Cave which opens out on to the side of the gorge. A metal grate balcony at the mouth of the cave looks up and down the gorge taking in the bridge and Leigh Woods and below your feet to the floor of the gorge 250 feet below. The building was originally a mill and dates from 1766. It is a Grade II* listed structure. The surrounding downs are part of the Avon Gorge SSSI. There is a cut bench mark next to the doorway to the building.
