Good place to stop and get some exercise en route from Southampton to visit our Devon kin. Below the hill in Stoke sub Hamdon visited the Priory remains. Earlier just had to visit Queen Camel village once in my life (fine church containing characters from a mediaeval bestiary no less.)

The obelisk stands on the ramparts of a massive hill fort on a spur of the limestone ridge to the southeast of the village of Stoke sub Hamdon. It was originally visited at the same time as the site of the missing pillar of Hamdon Hill in 2008. My revisit was primarily to exercise the newest addition to the family; Tilly the Basset. Ham Hill is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest, an Iron Age hill fort, a Roman site, and a country park. There is a car park for the country park nearby to the south. The views from the ramparts were stunning. Westwards over the village of Stoke sub Hamdon to the Blackdown Hills and northwards across low farmland to the Polden and Mendip Hills. The obelisk is the war memorial for the village. The hound enjoyed exploring the ditches and mounds of the ramparts of the hill fort and of the quarried interior.
