I had hoped to climb up from Mount Grace Priory but was told it was all private land, so we drove around to Cod Beck Reservoir and parked up there. A lovely walk up to the join up with the Cleveland Way, then a short distance along the ridge. Had to pop over a wall and barbed wire fence, but both were pretty low so OK. Great views to the East, not much in any other direction. Does the name suggest that the trees always blocked the view to the west? Simply retraced our route back to car and went for a beer at The Queen Catherine in Osmotherley.

This one has been on the to-do list for a long time, and today I finally braved the slog of a drive up from Hawnby. I parked in the Cod Beck carpark, and made my way straight up the hill, passing the Lyke Wake Walk stone and up to the intersection of the Cleveland Way. I had to wait for a gap in the Hardmoors 55 fell runners, but the fence is begging to be scaled. The pillar is in good condition, except for a big crack in one corner of the top part, and with an asphalt cap. It is sat in an empty field (no crops or livestock to disturb) and it was the work of a moment to nip across for a hands-on visit. I returned the same way.

The objective for today - drive from Alnwick to Coventry and bag one Trig Point in each county we pass through en-route. Planned a route to take in 14 Trigs in 14 different counties. This was #5 of 14 and by some way the best of the day. Given our tight schedule anything more than a few minutes from being a 'roadside' would be a luxury, anything too far from the A19-A1-M18-M1-M42 would also be problematic. This met the second criteria but not really the first, however it was well worth the 35 minutes there and back from the cattle grid at Scarth Nick just under a mile away. Glorious weather and equally glorious views, the dullness of Reddings Hill (Durham) and Newby (Cleveland) faded from the days memory!

I had rented out the Youth Hostel in Osmotherley for the weekend for 45 of us outdoor types. Woke up before the rest of the group and went for an early morning walk to bag this trig and a couple of caches. Came up the lane and returned via the Cleveland Way. Enjoyed a nice cooked breakfast after that.
