I am rather unsure whether the object I saw was the original beacon or not! I've logged it as 'Good' in the absence of any evidence to the contrary. A 1904 report into the grounding of a steam ship on the rocks ( http://www.plimsoll.org/images/74056_tcm4-311027.pdf ) recommends the establishment of a beacon on Rumble Rocks, while Shetlopedia ( http://shetlopedia.com/Rumble_Rock_Lighthouse ) describes a 'lighthouse' first lit in September 2001. It is probable that the 'tower' of the beacon seen by the OS surveyors forms part of the new 2001 'light' but I've been unable to find any 'concrete' information on the beacon online. I viewed whatever is there now from Ness of Copister (TP7416) against a backdrop of rapidly approaching rain, and again later from Heights of Ramnageo (TP3716).
