Same route as Borderer. Glorious weather for New Years Day, but not another soul around, and hardly any cars as we drove up to the Borders via Kielder. Found what looks like an Iron Age farmstead with associated fieldbanks at NY52979443, but the Historic Envionment Scotland Canmore database has just a vague mention of undated field system banks on the hillside.

Southern spur of Blackwood Hill or Arnton Fell, a marilyn that divides two arms of upper Liddlesdale. A great viewpoint for the dale, all the way to the Solway and snowcapped hills beyond. The pillar is intact but cracked. Bovine rubbing will do for it soon by the looks of it. Even if it does fall, the view should remain, providing the hill is not totally planted, that is. Returned via th marilyn top and the trackbed of the Waverley Line.

First visit. To record FB number. HISTORY: Pillar completed 18th March 1954 with seemingly older flush bracket S7291, construction cost 41.12s.2d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NT72/T1 within the Jedburgh secondary block during 1957. Levelled for height in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in September 1979. SITE VISIT: Spider retained OS centre plug with stamped font. Pillar is approx 300m SW from the summit. Open grazing top in a very remote part of the Borders therefore probably rarely visited. Sorry to see that in the years after my visit that it is suffering damage from livestock. No photos taken.
