Obviously visible from the Oban sea front and passed a bit nearer whilst on the ferry to Craigure. This is basically a 'plastic bag', i.e. It's close enough to get nearby but the practicalities of reaching such are untenable for most of us.

Final baggable item on the island for me. The monument stands almost 400m NE of the tump Cladh a'Bhearnaig. A granite obelisk and landmark for navigators, overlooking Ardantrive Bay. Erected 1883 to the memory of David Hutcheson (1799 - 1880), the entrepreneurial ship-owner who operated services to the islands as D. & A. Hutcheson, which later became Caledonian MacBrayne.

Excellent view of monument from ruins of Dunollie Castle. Also very fine views down the Sound of Kerrera, and to Lismore and Mull. According to tinternet, David Hutcheson set up the first ferry service from Oban to the Hebrides, in 1835, and which has subsequently evolved into CalMac.
