Found at the second time of asking and even then a devil to find and yes I initially walked past it! Eventually located following the good advice left by a previous blogger to pace out from the telegraph pole. Pruning required! Awarded higher mark because although damaged a 'topless' pillar is rare.

As others, from T junction north of Deane, walk up farm track. Model flying club on right by gate. Took no notice of me. Carry on due north across open field towards telegraph pole and dead tree at end of hedge line. Turn left and follow hedge line on west side heading north. About 90 - 100 paces later on the right, the pillar is in the hedge row. Thinner vegetation at this point at the time but probably be overgrown in a few weeks. Top has been cleanly sliced off. Oh dear. Good views towards west from hedge line, extra point for that.

oh Dear, a sorry sight! A decapitated trig pillar - never seen that before. The top section with the metal cap intact and indented lettering is lying nearby, exposing the vertical hole going down to the base of the pillar. All sight holes are clear. Had to kneel amongst the weeds to see the flush bracket (faces west). Walked up from the road junction to the south, about 13mins walk, keeping to the L of the hedgerows, except where you walk across the field along the track. Pillar is in the hedgerow, but visible with access from the west side.

We parked to the S of the trig, opposite the junction with the minor road that leads S to Deane. I.e. we parked on the N side of Harrow Way, just before the metal gate that leads into the field. Members of the Basingstoke Model Aero Club were flying their model aircrafts in the field. The field was very muddy and the soil was clayey, which stuck to our boots and was a real problem getting it off later on. Very messy business. We took the route as marked, see pic attached. No crops in the fields at this time of the year. If the farmer is not present, you could cut across the field along the tractor tracks if you wish (yellow dotted line). The trig is on the W side of the very wide very thorny 'hedge' that runs N-S. There are narrow cut-throughs across the 'hedge' (from E side to W side), the trig is accessible from one of these cut-throughs, a few metres into the 'hedge' (see pic attached). The area around the trig had been cleared by a previous visitor, hence we were able to get to it. Did some tidying up of the very thorny branches around the trig with my secateurs just to make the trig look like it is in a bit less of a sorry state. I imagine that this would be a difficult find in the summer. Decapitated - the head of the trig lies on the ground next to the trig. Original metal cap with indented lettering. FB faces W.

Arable fields, planted with neeps, either side of very wide hedgerow. Pillar was buried in thorn, spent some time cutting it free. As reported, very badly damaged - decapitated! Accessed top section and turned it to reveal original cap in place, deeply indented lettering. All sight holes open.

Decapitated pillar with the top piece nearby with face down so it's not possible to see whether its cap is still in place. The remaining standing block has its FB number intact, and all four sight holes are open - discovered this with some difficulty (forgot my secateurs which are a must for future visitors.) The pillar is a few paces into the 'hedge' on the west side, more easily spotted walking up from the south. Also, disappointed to see that the Deane Gate Inn has closed: this was a stopping point for the stagecoach, and Jane & Cassandra Austen with maybe a brother or two, would walk down from Steventon to collect the post. Yet another historic pub lost - changing times indeed.

The TP is now in the middle of a 20 yard wide buckthorn hedge. There are cut throughs in the hedge at regular intervals and one of these passes a couple of yards from the TP. I also think that the damage is such that it is most likely the result of a deliberate act.

The pillar has had the top 8" taken clean off. Does not look like a hedge trimmer as the blackthorn is as thick as ever. Suggest it could be deliberate by farmer? Access from the South opposite junction to Deane. Follow track, then field edge NE to pick up another track from Stubbs coppice that leads to the pillar which is behind maize cover for pheasants.

This is trespassy as it's well off the footpath. The OS map shows a field line but it's actually a 2m wide hedge. The trig is nestling in the middle of very dense undergrowth on the east side of the hedge. Saw two deer and millions of pheasants. Good condition and lovely views. Metal plug with heavily indented lettering.
