In Canterbury on holiday and noticed this impressive monument. Took photo on off chance that it was an intersected station...and it was. A very dreary day today.

The Dane John Monument is one of the first sights of Canterbury I have childhood memories of, after the Cathedral and the West Gate Towers. Passed by here many, many times over the years and glanced up over the city walls to the mound. Climbed up here on July 1 2003 and maybe long before that ? On this occasion we encountered a school party - busy taking notes. Is trig-pointing part of the curriculum ? Pleased to find what we were looking for - the benchmark (see Bradford Obelisk), it's on the south-east corner - very well defined. Great views of the city from here - the Cathedral, the windmill on St. Martin's Hill etc. etc. Well worth the visit. Park & Ride is 2.50 all day and whichever one you use, the bus drops you 500 m walk from the trig. Hard to believe now but before the creation of the A2 by-pass and later the M20, most of the Dover - London continental traffic passed right by here !
