Pulled over onto verge where other cars were parked on side of minor road about half a mile west of Burchett’s Green. Uphill heading south of west along woodland footpath, becomes a tarmac track. House at top. Slightly thrown as OS Landranger gave the impression pillar was beside a footpath. Walked around perimeter of property to south through woods and wilting rhododendrons. On west side, decided needed help from here. So, it’s inside the property boundary. Back to entrance on east side. Up to front door. Knocked, nobody about. Had a look around garden, felt very self conscious but ready to ask if anyone appeared. Took a while to locate as it is painted black, beside a bush with a flower pot on the top and a grill lying against it. Was almost next to it and actually looking at it before realising that was it! Guess it once had views all around. Not any more. It’s on the east side of the house.

By now I was completely soaked from head to toe. I cycled up the track to the house where there was a bloke angle grinding the gates in the rain. I asked if i could get access to the TP and he called over a woman. I think she must be the person others have called "the nanny". She wasnt too sure what i was after, but said i could come in and go anywhere in the garden. As i must have looked rather soggy, to say the least, i was quite surprised she was so accommodating. The ball on top of it has been moved and now there is only some stones on it, and the spider is now completely visible. The centre cap is missing. Still a rather strange colour green. No views except for the garden. Left via the front gate and said goodbye and thanked the bloke working on the gate. I do hope it stops raining or i will have a very soggy cycle home.

Parked to the NNE along Honey Lane near the 90 degree bend, then walked up Ashley Hill along the public footpath (S direction) until we got to the private road that leads to the gated compound with the 2 nice houses. No response at the gate intercom, no yapping dog, no sign of humans. Very feeble CCTV sticker at gate, but no CCTV cameras visible from the gate. Could not see the trig from the fence at all. Pedestrian side gate was closed but unlocked, so I sneaked in as it was not in view of the houses. As others have said, the trig is to the left of the gate and then towards the house by a few metres. Trig was completely engulfed in the bushes, green paint flaking off, unable to get close to it so I just stuck my hand into the bushes to get a few pics. The big ornamental stone ball on top of the trig was gone!!! A couple of square metal plates were on top of the trig (I'm guessing they were base plates or levelling shims for the stone ball) hence unable to see the centre cap. (Can the next visitor move the metal plates to check the centre cap?) Trig was in good condition as far as I could see, except for the lack of taste in the green paint! Went to the nearby Dew Drop Inn for a cold drink afterwards. Nice dog-friendly pub!

almost missed a trick here. I hadn't realized it was in fenced in garden. I tried ringing on gate intercom. just caught glimpse of it from Peregrinus' accurate description. it is more like 15m left of gates and 8m into garden. However if you stand next to the fence7/8 m left of gates you can just see the pillar clearly in the bushes. However was just about to give up and go when thought I'd just look closely at the pedestrian gate to the right of the closed drive gates. It was open so I decided to go in as view was obscured from house. So I got my photos.

I was forunate that after ringing the intercomm for 10 mins or more, suffering the yapping dog, a car came up the road to enter the property. Access was kindly given for me to photograph the pillar. I had been able to just make out the lower part of the pilar from outside the fencing. The green paint is now peeling badly back to the previous white. The ball is still in place on the top. No views as surrounded by woodland. I didn't notice any damage and none is mentioned in any posts here, so perhaps the next person that gets access could check it out?

Should have read previous logs before trying for this one. Was visiting Maidenhead to attend a wedding and looking at the map this appeared a real possibility. I parked on the corner of Honey Lane near Ladyeplace and used the footpaths up through the woodland to arrive at the gates of the mansion that others have mentioned. Still thinking that I could reach the pillar I followed the exterior of wall and fence to the accompaniment of a yapping dog on the other side. Eventually it dawned on me that I was on futile search being on the wrong side of the perimeter fence so I retraced my steps back to the gate. Here my luck changed as they were just opening with a car driving out. I went over to apologise for annoying the dog and went on to explain my reason for my search. At this point I was very kindly invited into the grounds and taken to the pillar. It is still in the centre of a grassed area but now well and truly hidden in some large bushes. Once into the bushes the pillar is as others have described - camouflaged with green paint and a large black ornament being placed on its top. The really good thing is that it is still there and failing a total re-landscaping of the garden should remain so for years to come. Having taken some photo's I thanked my host profusely and departed the way I had come. The noisy dog was nothing more than a hand licking terrier.

The property has been done up though (by very rich people) and it is now in the grounds of a very large house. We asked over the gate intercom if we could visit the trig, permission was granted, and the gates opened automatically. The trig has been painted dark green and has an ornamental stone sphere perched on top of it by way of decoration. There's no accounting for taste. At least it hasn't been destroyed!
