Dedicated to St Mary the Virgin. 12thC Grade I listed; built on site of earlier Saxon church; remodelled 13thC, with Victorian and 20thC restorations. OS records 3 extant elements for this trig: Bolt (presume this is on tower roof but not seen); Flagstaff and Pinnacle - both visible on tower. Interesting benchmark rivet on tower buttress.

I was collecting my daughter from Brownies in a nearby hall, so left enough time to look at this trig point. I also found the aforementioned OS rivet benchmark http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm40556. A lovely example

The OS rivet benchmark This rivet can be seen at the south west base of the tower (the shopping centre side of the tower).

On the way home after an early shift at work in Bristol. Parked by the church entrance. A seeming oasis of calm in an otherwise very busy South Gloucestershire town!

The Church of St Mary the Virgin stands to the north of the modern town centre. The trig consisted of a roof bolt, a pinnacle and a flagstaff. The church has a lofty three stage tower but the door was locked and there was no access to the tower roof. The pinnacle of the stair turret and the flagstaff could still be seen on top of the tower. The churchyard was a pleasant haven from the bustle of the nearby busy roads of the town centre but the boundary trees and bushes prevent a view from ground level. A primary school lies to the east of the church and a children’s playground to the north. St Mary's was started in Norman times but mostly dates from the 15th century. The church is a Grade I listed building and has a rivet bench mark on a buttress of the tower.
