Armed with the OS sketch, tape measure and digging tools, I thought Id give this a go. Unfortunately the measurements definitely place the block under the tarmac. I tried prodding and digging next to the adjacent kerb but only found debris. Its either under the tar or gone.

As andyc said, the sketch dimensions seem to point to grass not tarmac, if so the bench may have been moved /replaced. Anyway, prodding and digging found soft soil and kerb foundations but no block so it could well have been removed during the alterations. Nice surroundings

Nice spot to watch the mud flats on the River Coquet and associated bird life, lousy spot to look for a surface block that's been tarmac'd over. It could be that it's lurking beneath the tarmac, or it could have been dug up and disposed of. Either way it's not going to be found for sometime if ever.

The area has been changed by running a cycle path (NCN route 1) through it. GPS points to the area of a seat, but I suspect it is buried under the widened footpath.

Took sketch but had printed it without the measurements! Decided to make new measurements to tarmac area and it looks like the block should be in the grassy area not under the tarmac. Will go back for a dig around when there are not noisy women talking on the bench on their mobile phones.

I didn't have the OS diagram with me, but my GPS directed me to between the telephone manhole and the bench, so I took photos of both of them. In retrospect, I am unable to judge whether the tarmac has gone over the block.

This area appears to have been recently resurfaced, so it's possible that the block has been covered over.

Pavement and bench area has been recently resurfaced. Didn't have a tape measure so could still be there and would need digging for.
