Grade II* listed church with interesting history. Founded before 1154; demolished to make way for re-building of Bristol Bridge 1763-8; it was re-built at the same time, being completed by 1769. Interior then destroyed by WWII bombing 1940; re-built 1974-5 as the City Museum; and from 2007 used as council offices. Octagonal 3-stage spire. FB G2576 across the road on Welsh Back.

I viewed the church from Bristol Bridge then walked on to look for bench marks in Broad Street where I took four more pictures then tripped over a kerb and broke my camera! I'd had it nine years, taken thousands of trig-related pictures, so here's the last one for TUK from my Olympus C-5050 Zoom. RIP!

The Church of St Nicholas stands next to St Nicholas Street in the Old City area of Bristol City Centre. The Old City has a number of fine older buildings and narrow streets and is bounded by the modern offices and the retail development of Broadmead and of The Mall. The quirky stalls and the bustle of St Nicholas Market were particularly interesting. Nearby are the remains of St Peterís Church and Bristol Castle. To the south east of the site Bristol Bridge spans the Floating Harbour. The interior was destroyed in the Bristol Blitz. At present the building is occupied by the Bristol and Region Archaeological Services. It is a Grade II* listed building. The FB G2576 is situated close by on the side of a building on the corner of Baldwin Street and Welsh Back.
