St Stephen's Church, Kirkby Stephen. Beautiful Grade II listed church, built in 1240, and rebuilt / restored between 1847 and the 1870's. The flagstaff has gone. A lot of people have been confusing it with the weather vane pole that is in the centre of the tower, and which is still there (although the vane itself has disappeared from its pole - sometime between 2018 and 2020). The flagstaff however was to the west of the weather vane. Looking at the photographs on here, the flagstaff disappears between June 2012 when @edfielden photographed it, and September 2012 when @CJO visited the church. Hence, the flagstaff has been gone for almost 9 years. There is a CBM and 1GL/PA bolt on the south face of the tower. Did not investigate the bolt

Kirkby Stephen is a firm favourite of ours but I hadn't bagged the church tower before; so that's been put right. However today's interest was the Andy Goldsworthy sheepfold art works in nearby villages (Church Brough, Warcop etc)

St Stephen's Church is a Grade II* listed building, it was rebuilt c1230 with the tower added early 16thC. There is weather vane at the top of a pole at centre of the tower roof which may or may not be the FS the OS sighted to, however, there is no halyard or pulley at the top. OS also lists Centre and Bolt as components. Also 1GL Bolt and cut benchmark located on the tower's S face.
