Grade II listed, along with a very generous Keepers' Cottage, 1865. Viewed from Valentia Road. This must have been the holy grail of keepers' postings, maybe reserved for the head of the establishment... there will surely have been a small room for a man to operate the light - or he could have lived nearby?

It was a 4am alarm call for the drive to West Kirby with friends so that we could make the walk at Low tide to the islands of Little Eye, Little Hilbre & Hilbre Island. In total, we walked eight miles to bag 5 trigs in the West Kirby area. This was the last. Having visited the islands we made our way to Grange Hill before descending back to the town centre and then on to the former lighthouse, now a dwelling. The very accommodating owner saw us taking an interest and invited us for the guided tour. It appears to still have the original wrought iron stair rails. The owner was very knowledgeable and helped us to identify various landmarks on the panoramic views, including Blackpool Tower on the horizon. To the naked eye it was basically a vertical black line but through his powerful binoculars it was very easy to see and identify. There is a CBM on the junction of Valentia Rd & The King's Gap. The owner really brought this visit to life, hence my high score.

Grade II listed lighthouse on Valentia Road, built as part of a pair of lighthouses in 1763. This was known as the 'upper lighthouse', and was rebuilt in 1865. There was also a mobile wooden lighthouse known as the 'lower lighthouse', which was moved according to differing tides and shifting sands to remain aligned to the upper lighthouse. The trig lighthouse was closed on the 14th May 1886, and is now a private residence. The lower lighthouse was closed in 1908, and demolished in 1922. The two lighthouses were built to guide ships into the Hoyle Lake anchorage at night. The white lighthouse in some of the photo's on here is NOT the trig lighthouse. That is a fake lighthouse (i.e. a folly) on Stanley Road. There is a cut benchmark close to the trig lighthouse on a wall on the junction between the Kings Gap and Valentia Road.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoylake To facilitate safe access into the Hoylake anchorage, two lighthouses were constructed in 1763. The lower light was a wooden structure that could be moved according to differing tides and shifting sands to remain aligned to the upper light, which was a permanent brick building. Both of these structures were rebuilt a century later. The upper lighthouse, consisting of an octagonal brick tower, last shone on 14 May 1886 and is now part of a private residence in Valentia Road. The lower lighthouse, closer to the shore in Alderley Road, was deactivated in 1908 and demolished in 1922.
