Almost missed this! Not realising it was a trig point. Don't come much better than this!

Got as close as I could without a boat. Lovely view on a sunny day.

Constructed 1859, became fully automated 1994. We visited this lighthouse in Aug 1993, didn't manage to get quite so close today, but a fine view can be had from the ruins of Hatherwood battery N of the Alum Bay menagerie (not where my picture was taken from). ***Revisited 14 April 2014 when we took a boat trip out to se it a little closer, quite a thick sea mist but quite visible.

Visited on a trip to Alum Bay. Alum Bay is a tourist trap , but the chairlift to the beach and the 20 minute boat ride to the Needles are a must. The lighthouse is still functioning, so presumably it's in good condition. Wikipedia notes that it ‘was built by Trinity House in 1859 on the outermost of the chalk rocks near sea level. … In 1987 a helipad was added to the top of the lighthouse, and it became fully automated when the last keepers left on 8 December 1994’. I walked over West High Down to look at the lighthouse from the viewpoint at the New Battery, and found an interesting OS benchmark in the form of a rivet in the top of a War Department boundary stone on the highest point of the Down (SZ 3067 8496, 141.1925 m).

Sailed closely past whilst on a visit back to the homeland - the silly thing is I'd never done it when I lived here! In great condition and one of the most iconic spots on the island. The only 10/10 I've given so far!

Walking on from Tennysons Monument/High Down. Not sure I could get much nearer without a boat - the Old Battery was closed by the time I arrived. On the south side of the Battery is New Battery where rocket engines were tested in the Sixties.
