From Achfary following walkhighlands route (as The Jackrustles). Not as tough as I'd feared but weather was good and clear. Quite a wet walk to begin with. Final ascent is steep but good underfoot. Fantastic views in all directions including the Ben Griams but the view towards Arkle must be the highlight. Pillar has a crack and chunk missing at mid height. No cap, never was an FB. Had some of Mrs B's birthday cake before heading back. Total trip 4 hours 5 mins unhurried. P.s I too thought of Robin Cook whilst having lunch at the top. I remember his fine speech on the Iraq War. Curious how far we can be led in the wrong direction...

Took the walk highlands suggested route, starting from the parking just north of Achfary, which apparently has a black phone box as it's on land owned by the same landowner for Westminster? http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/scourie/achfary/ It said 3.8km from the car park but avoiding the bogs and all the wee detours I think it was at least an 8km round trip, which took us just over 5 hours. We started on the wee track shown on the map and then found a small track which disappeared in places and roughly followed the Leathad na Stioma which has Gneiss ribs apparently! The first part wasn't too bad but the last 750 odd meters was a killer for Mrs TJR as it was very steep! During this section you gained height very quickly. It was all worth it as the weather was lovely and the views superb.

No cap or plug; built without FB. Crack around pillar at mid height with a couple of smallish chunks of concrete missing. Just N of and a little lower than summit. Great hill, steep with iconic profile. From NC265437, mapped track, then cairn at 258432 marks start of NE ridge path leading to summit, steep and rocky in places but nothing technical despite how it looks from the road. Anything as close as this to Foinaven and Arkle is bound to have a great view. I'm not political, but found myself thinking about Robin Cook as I climbed this. I wonder exactly where he died.
