I'm very concerned about this trig. I live locally and I've visited it quite a few times. A few years ago there was some damage including a small hole. This time the damage is much worse. There's a big chunk missing from one edge and a large crack around three sides. I worry that that the crack will soon extend all the way through and then some oaf will push the top off and roll it down the hill. Looking at previous visits it appears that most of the damage is recent, probably from last winter. The trig stands on National Trust land and there are rangers at the nearby visitor centre. I spoke to one, who is also a member of the Friends of Box Hill and he said that they (the friends) may be prepared to help. He also gave me the email address of the local NT manager and I plan to write to him. The problem, of course, is that the NT has not yet realised that they are now responsible by default for all of the trig points on their land. If you visit this trig and you agree with me, go and chat to the rangers about the state of it. They are very approachable and they are the NT's eyes on the ground.

I made a real fist of this one , turning up witout the correct O/S and a memory from the site of a fella's tombstone marking the point where he was buried face down. I did the obvious and walked off in the direction of the large visitor centre and found an old disused fort and said tombetone but after much running around alas no Trig and no O/S to check it with. I went back to the car and drove a bit further along the road and then saw the viewpoint and success was mine there was the repainted Trig with a little bit of new graffiti and some spectacular views over Dorking. Some dodgepot Herbert must have gone equipped with a rather large sledge hammer to knock such a large chunk out of the Trig , a real shame. From a distance it looks like it's been the victim of a Shark attack and judging by other loggers photo's it must have happened in the last year or so. I wish I hadn't been so pushed for time it would have been a nice place to return with a decent set of binoculars. The Ordnance Survey website details a computing year of 1945 and the height is 171.968 metres (564.20 feet).
