Whilst working away in The West Midlands I was getting out for some great evening hill walks. This is 5/6 in doing The Shropshire Six Summits. I quite like the re-use of old pillar parts into the toposcope. I know it would be nice to have the pillar still but there are now some that are just crumbling away due to no love, I think this one will survive a bit longer.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 14th June 1948 costing £10.5s.9d. Computed as secondary triangulation station SO79/2 within the Bridgnorth block during 1948. Levelled for height to Class 1 tertiary standards in 1972. Last maintained by the OS in June 1982. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from west. Room for two cars in hill entrance by bend of road at SO585868. Followed mapped RoW to summit. During 2006, this monument to map making was needlessly destroyed on behalf of small time local groups of amatuers who were obviously uninformed with regard to the greater scheme of outdoor matters. While the replacement toposcope is quite neat albeit somewhat high for smaller people, it could have been sited on another peak without the need to kill off the triangulation pillar. A small consolation is that the flush bracket and spider are now built into the stone staircase. My GPS reading is for the flush bracket. The spider has a plain brown resin plug. The flush bracket lies southwest (compass measurement 150°) of the pillar site. 360° panoramic view from summit.

There's been a lot of wind expended by past visitors and I say don't become enbroiled, it's not worth it. I can think of three I tried to log and they've been moved and not evidence exists. This spot is a significant place - the County Top and the toposcope is quite superb. Even thieves have spared it. At least the Flush Bracket and spider are still accessible and really this is what we Trig pointers are after. Yes it's a shame the pillar's gone but it's details live on and are baggable. Even on a day as wild as this. Ignore the aerials and dishes, they serve a purpose and those that moan would probably be louder if they had no communications at all. More serious is the erosion being caused by trail bikes over the paths. They're the destructive vandals in an area of natural beauty. Good walk up from Blackford along the Shropshire Way path and back. I'll have to return to collect the other four in the area.

Pillar completely replaced by plinth (no viewfinder as yet); spider and bracket set into the steps as if by an afterthought and look a bit odd there. Murky grey afternoon offset by a good walk up through the woodland from Burwarton. I remember once dragging a large (but friendly) alsatian onto the pillar so that it could be 'top dog in Shropshire' - may its ghost return on winter nights to haunt the parish council.
