Second in today's concrete ring hunt. Up from Dyke Heads west of Gunnerside. Paths vaguely where the map suggests, but took shortcuts through heather on way up (probably not worth the bother). Hardly needed the GPS as pile of stones marks the spot. Good thing we'd bought gloves and jug to bail: this must be the deepest trig we've ever come across. Kept thinking we'd reached the last stone, but then there were even more . Finally had to bail the peat soup out to see the bolt. Another impressive find, CJO, way too deep for amateurs like us to find by poking with screwdrivers..

Location easily found SW of path and SE of wall, hole infilled with small stones, large stones then small cairn on top. Reinstated after finding 2 inch bolt which was underwater, easily identified by feel. Sturdy waterproof gloves useful, bailer would be handy too. From SE, Gunnerside, mapped path good initially then mostly virtual over rough moorland before reappearing shortly before trig. Descended E (rough!) to good unpaved road for return. Another great find CJO team!

Circular walk from Gunnerside. Paths intermittent once off the track. Cairn easily located S of gate in wall. 72 stones removed. Hole half-full of water; took about 10 minutes to empty. Large bolt exposed, surrounded by a slightly misshapen ring. 74 stones replaced (not sure where the extra 2 came from). Impressive find by CJO. Cotton Grass, Cloudberry, Curlews, Cuckoo and a Concrete Ring!

Good trails lead from the roadside right to the summit, the trig cairn was easily spotted but it was a real backbreaker of a job lifting all the freezing rocks out my hands were frozen. Was dead lucky as the ring was just about to fill with water but the bolt was still exposed. Super find Chris and Bagging assistant felt very remote today with the moody skies.

Its still there! 2’ down and located 48.5m due south of the gate. Hole filled with a lot of rocks. Backfilled to avoid an accident for someone. Its concrete ring is broken, with some lettering missing in places. 2” light coloured brass bolt. A small stone was seen peeping through the heather at the GR. Upon removal of heather, numerous stones (from what turned out to be a 2 feet deep hole) were then excavated, followed by a peaty soup which was bailed out by the Bagging Assistant. Fortunately water did not freely flow into the excavations. A nice sunny day with a cold wind, frost remains in shaded hollows.
