Parked on grass verge near the lane leading to Whiteside Farm. Followed track through farm & up to TP. Luckily path mostly dry and combined with a perfect walking day (No wind, bright sun & moderate temperature) made for a great visit. Excellent views in all directions.

5 of 9 today. Parked near the start of the byway near the farm. No dogs with me today as was expecting lots of cattle. The ground was so swamped so they were still in the cattle sheds. Lots of sheep though. A nice 1 hour return walk on PROW and access land.

Parked on the verge by Whiteside farm, tucked the wingmirrors in on the car as there were cows about (or evidence of them). The track was boot deep in mud and puddles. What cows were out had decided to stake a claim to the track and weren't for moving so had to go around them through the bog.

My second visit, different route. Parked at top of lane that leads W to Scotchcoulthard Cottages. Below the cottages a stream has to be forded, and after a couple of days of heavy showers the stream was at best calf deep...Burndivot Common was tough going until the track from Whiteside Farm was reached. TP unchanged since last visit. Views are magnificent. Headed N and picked up track and headed NE to Grindon Green, and from there W then S back to start. Several miles with little to see except larch trees, not the most exciting route ever devised.

I imagine the stroll over Thirlwall Common on a warm, sunny summer's day to be delightful, the air full of the song of skylarks and the scent of heather, the walk culminating with bagging a well preserved TP with fine views. Sadly imagining that was all I could do today, as the only sounds were a blustery wind chasing black clouds across a steel grey sky and the 'splosh splosh splosh' of my progress up a very wet and muddy track. Thank the Lord for good quality wellingtons!

Parked near Benkhill and walked to Scotchcoulthard. The off piste section across to Burn Divot was hard work negotiating the high tussocks and boggy terrain. This trig has an eerie feel to it. Located close to a ruined drovers building in a fairly desolate part of Hadrian Wall country. The history of this building intrigues me. I'm off to do some research.

The trig is in a sheepfold which surrounds the ruins of a well-built house, rather a surprise in such remote and thinly-populated landscape. I've checked the Historic Environment Record and it's described as a drover's house, built 1736. Easy parking on verge of public road near farm south of trig.
