From car park shown on Explorer map ESE of trig. The path from the car park was blocked by windthrown trees so had to go directly up the steep hill to join the forestry path by the Loch Ken viewpoint. Unfortunately the clag was down so no view from the pillar.

Got to the end of good forest track from Loch Ken side then through trees trying to avoid crags, easy once the huge granite slabs are reached. Great views but the fire tower has collapsed.

From the W starting at Upper Gairloch on the Raider's Road. Initially rough going through forest and forest break to road at NX 6219,7314. Slope E of the road has been clear felled and a 'heavy forest machinery track' provides easy route to just below the summit. Trig located on a fine granite slab. A perfect place to eat Easter Eggs and enjoy the view.

Down W through trees from Bennan, track N for a short distance then cut through scrub & trees to parallel track, not too tricky to get up through vegetation, diverted slightly left at road end which led easily enough between crags. Nice summit, stuck to tracks on way back.

Walked across from Bennan Hill, some tree bashing, some forest trails, some forest roads. Pillar sits on an outcrop in a cleared area of the forest giving extensive views all directions except N where trees obscure. Original centre cap retained, raised lettering; LHD side sight hole open.

Can't remember exactly where we parked and started for this but (however route on attached screenshot) we took forest tracks for as long as we could and ended up at the base of the crags NX 63287 73182 (only shown on 1:25k). Mr TJR and the boys were ahead of me and took a route straight up, I sadly walked along the crags looking for a way up only finding one at the end at roughly NX 62923 73468. Found this last section a little tough. However when I got the top I was rewarded with the best view - loved it!

vgc, faded white; metal cap, wide raised letters. Interesting hill and summit with a fair bit of slabby granite; decent view. Heap of timber presumably used to be the fire tower. From NX622732 (where I parked on a quiet winter day) a rough tussocky ride climbs steeply E - pretty rough; I went inside plantation which is reasonably open. Then compass bearing from ride jct at 625732 thru fairly dense young spruce.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 5th August 1955 costing £48.2s.6d. Computed using distomat survey methods as secondary triangulation station NX56/DM/5 within the Kirkcudbright block during 1958. Levelled for height to Class 2 precision also in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in June 1988. SITE VISIT: Parked in roadside recess at NX635754. Followed path through undergrowth by burn, then forest track network to NX632732. I defy any obsessive m*nro bagger who denounces this as a wee hill to come and actually try to bag the Cairn Edward summit. Bring your map, compass and GPS, but find your own route up. Pillar in good condition still mostly white. Spider retains OS centre cap with raised weathered large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces 91°, east. Vented through south sight hole. Lots of rock outcrops, large cairn at top, fire tower collapsed. Views in most directions, but partly lost to conifers in places.
