Bit of palaver getting to this one as a tractor was blocking the public road at Cairnhandy Farm and no-one seemed to be around to shift it. Didn't fancy parking at the farm so parked instead at the church near Ardwell Mains and followed the track to the trig field and straight up. Clag down so no view.

Easy access off a lane and through farmer's field. Lovely views to Isle of Man, Ireland and Dumfries and Galloway. Not crystal clear , but çould still see outline of the hills.

Good condition pillar at field edge. Parked on road to northwest, easy trek up the field boundary. FB faces north-west-ish with south-west-ish sighthole open only. Cap present with raised lettering. View not too bad.

Roadside verge parking to NW. Followed pasture/forest boundary steeply up a muddy sheep pasture. Pillar site on NE side of stock fencing. Original top cap retained, raised lettering; RHS sight hole open. Very smooth screed finish. With Alex and Tony.

After epic fail on Cairngarroch to the north because of mega quagmire everywhere it was delight to actually get into the field just to the north without potentially going shin deep in mud. Still pretty wet ground round pillar

Easy parking and gate access

Simple walk up the field from a gateway directly to the north. Accompanied by a herd of frisky heifers on my way up but then they left for an adjoining field. Pillar in very good condition and still retains a metal raised letters plug. Lovely all round viewpoint.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 29th January 1955 costing £18.10s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NX56/DM/7 by distomat survey within the Kirkcudbright block during 1958. Levelled for height also in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in May 1985. SITE VISIT: Pillar in good condition, on NW side of mapped fenceline. Spider retains OS centre cap with raised large narrow letter. Flush bracket faces 333° NNW. Vented through NW sight hole.
