Ninth Trig of a 10 Trig Day and easily the best of the bunch. Good walk from Nettlingflat along farm track as far as the Cakemuir Burn, then over two good pasture fields to the pillar, in good condition and which affords excellent views in most directions except east. Just under 3 miles return and 268ft of ascent.

Parked at NT4109256090. There is a double fence next to this which runs along to the plantation, so easy to get away from any moooo. The fire breaks in the plantation are wide and easy to follow, the game keepers use them i think as a good ATV track is visible. The last short fire break to the trig is a little bit over grown but has a solid path along it.

Parked at a gate on the B6367 as the A7 route to the south is now blocked somewhat by the newly reinstated Borders railway. Followed the farm track over the railway (great spot for steam special photos as it is near the summit of the 1:70 Falahill incline) and bearing left at Cowbraehill farm towards the neighbouring cottage then up the slope to the pillar. Decent views S-W-N.

Third visit. Parked in layby, east side of A7 immediately south of county boundary signs. Cakemuir Hill was once in Midlothian but in 1975 became part of the Borders. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces 57° ENE. All four sight holes open but innards are now filled with debris. Panorama includes: Scald Law, Allermuir Hill, Braid Hills, Arthurs Seat, West Lomond, East Lomond, Largo Law, Skid Hill, North Berwick Law.

Can easily be reached through the forest from the south. Trick is to take the obvious big ride and wait until your GPS shows the trig at right angles to the track.. soon there will be a ride on the left that goes straight there. Popular scratching post with good views away from the forestry.

The summit of Cakemuir Hill is 1 mile east of the A7 midway between Heriot and Middleton. This open grazing top was once in Midlothian, but following Local Government reorganisation in 1975, Cakemuir Hill is now in the Scottish Borders. There are no access problems in reaching this trig. Quickest approach is from Cowbraehill to the west. The trig pillar is in very good condition. Both horizontal sighting tubes are open at both ends, through which the stud is easily seen. The spider has its original OS plug with engraved shallow font. The flush bracket is on the northeast face of the pillar. Minor erosion to ground by livestock. Panornamic views to Pentlands, Trossachs, Ochils, Lomonds etc. Visibility over 70 miles. Revisited and photographed by GRP 14/05/2003.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed in September 1943 costing £8.8s.3d. Later in 1943 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NT48/T105 in the Edinburgh secondary block. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1959. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in August 1981.
