(3490) Awkward parking today. But access into the wood and then to the location is fine. Fallen leaves litter the ground now, but where the block resides is obvious. Hands and knees job to remove the back filled bricks etc. Bolt very deep down, so a good first find by ted.

Buried block installed November, 1952. Easy access into Stonehills Plantation from a busy road. Well-used paths lead to the remains of two brick-built structures, covered with graffiti. The OS sketch at https://trigpointing.uk/wiki/File:TP18810_Stonehills_WStn_Sketch.jpg indicates the NW angle of the larger structure (apparently a blast shelter) with local measures of 1.56 and 1.10 metres from the wall ends fixing the trig position. The Office File also mentions 'no detector ring - scrap metal on top of block'. Soft soil with roots and pebbles; found a very rusty metal hook; also plastic/textile rubbish presumably more recent. Further excavation finally found the block approx 18" down. Medium-sized countersunk bolt almost flush with the concrete surface. Partly back-filled the hole with bricks and left a wooden marker but the measures should suffice to find this one. Surrounded by trees so no view.

Couldn't find it 18th Mar 2023  18:05  by peregrinus

Remains of two structures, one underground. BB location seems to be between the two, very poor GPS accuracy in forest, some brambles, a few minutes probing soft ground, no luck. Parked in entrance opposite.
