HISTORY: Pillar completed 7th May 1957, cost unknown. Computed as secondary triangulation station NN96/9 within the Pitlochry block during 1959. Levelled for height also in 1959. Last maintained by the OS in 1977. Officially recorded by OS as destroyed 18/12/1989. SITE VISIT: Approached from Invervar. Parked on south side of public road beside telephone box at NN666482. Signposted footpath leaves north side of road ~75m west of telephone box. This waymarked route leads to the estate track which follows the east bank of the Invervar Burn to NN659494. Crossing the footbridge over the burn, the footpath traverses to the northmost tip of the woods and then follows a direct route WNW to the summit of Carn Gorm. Pillar toppled, with flush bracket side face down. First job was to establish if the FB was still present underneath. Extracted enough boulders and debris to confirm by finger touch that the FB was still present. Managed to photograph said plate following further excavation sufficient to place a camera underneath. Spider still present, centre open. Flush bracket possibly faced WSW, ~248° when pillar was standing. Vented through right sight hole, rear and left plugged, front face down. Full 360° panoramic view from top. Upon leaving, continued on the circuit visiting the other three Munros; Meall Garbh, Carn Mairg and Meall na Aighean before rejoining the outward route at NN664487 to return to Invervar.

Toppled broken-off Hotine in shelter cairn which needed digging out of frozen snow. Also what appears to be a large chunk of a stone built pillar. Hard to be sure, too much snow lying. OS trig archive mentions an Old Trig (hole in stone) but no mention of an old pillar, http://www.bench-marks.org.uk adds nothing either. From photos it seems pillar is toppled but more or less in original location. RodS comments: OS archive shows the Pillar (destroyed) and Old Trig (Hole in Stone) with exactly the same location, suggesting that the pillar might have been built exactly over the "Old Trig", so that when the pillar toppled, the original mark became visible again.
