(2707) Parked about halfway up Sunny Hill and then walked the rest. Talk about steep! A shame this one is now no longer, as it would have been a fine pillar to visit. Interesting to note in comments that its eventual fate was to be buried nearby. Also interesting to note that it was a passive station - surprised the OS acquiesced to its destruction.... Pillar history: Build date and cost not present in the records. Last maintained by the OS in 1961. FB was S4530. Most likely destroyed mid 2014.

Been meaning for years since reading about its sad demise, to seek out fields owner and hear the story from boom direct. Today was the day, David Beckham's 47th birthday (his birthdate trig S2575 is at Grafton 15 miles west of my house in York) . Knocked on a few doors and found that Terry, former builder, now owns the bungalow house last on the left at the top of Sunny Hill next to the southern end of the golf course, called Old QUARRY Edge. He'd previously owned all the lower 4-5 houses below and done them up and sold them on... But had always really wanted this one so finally bought it when it came on the market. He owns the old quarry at the edge to the west too, as well as the field opposite that has the trig on its hill top. He said there was a group of teenage kids sitting round the trig drinking and revelling and he approached them and said it was a private field and got a mouthful of abuse. He decided the trig was a magnet for yobs & trespassers and decided to dig it up and he's buried it just about 50 metres away at bottom corner of the field to the east.. Very sad that he'd not thought to find another site for it. Says he still has the OS letter somewhere. I've asked him to see if he can find it as I'd like to read it. He says it says that it was okay to remove the pillar but it mustn't be Re-sited on someones front garden, which seemed a strange requirement from OS as other trigs have been Re-sited in front gardens. Think of in Malton and Diseworth.

Visible from lane but Private sign on gate most off putting. Went to house opposite to establish whether private really meant me and was referred to a house down the lane. Could not get any response so, like others, used the sand box as a means of access. Did the necessary and returned to the lane unchallenged. Pillar in good condition apart from missing plug. Stands proudly on a hillock with reasonable views into the valley but wonder how long it will be before the land is sold for more housing.
