Met Friends of Hillsborough Society clearing Blackthorn at summit. They explained history of area. Found c.1.5m from both bench bases. Only one actual bench remains. 6” deep. Found a red “Slims” wrapper at base of hole. Replaced turf.

Walked up from the SE. Nice spot, but no probing or digging tools with me today.

I reckon the trig site is currently between the benches on top of a headland to the east of Ilfracombe. There was no sign of the trig on the surface and I didn’t attempt an excavation. I walked up to the site from town. There is a fine view to the west over Ilfracombe toward Lundy in the distance. The South Wales coast is on the horizon across the Bristol Channel to the north. The headland has impressive cliffs and is the site of an Iron Age Promontory Fort. It is a Scheduled Monument and a Local Nature Reserve and is within the North Devon Coast AONB.

Possible location marked by seats. Walked up with Dusty but had no equipment for proper search. Used GPS to guide to this location.

Great view of Ilfacombe. Lots of rock on surface and little soil so why bury a block and not fix a bolt?
