(2708) Chevin Road for parking. I could see activity going on in the yard as I walked up to the farm - passing sheep as I went. Friendly chaps gave both permission and directions for the trig 'I should start selling tickets for this!' Apparently somebody had called by only yesterday for the same purpose. Pillar soon found. Area thankfully not too overgrown. All is good, and still retains all its metalwork. Original centre cap sports lightly indented lettering. Good clear views across to Belper. Had another wee chat with the guys on the way back down. Pillar history: Built on the 1st of April 1948, cost not listed in records. Last maintained by the OS in February of 1961.

The first pillar of three I visited on this hillside and my first serious days trig-pointing this year. Situated as it is, it was always going to be a bit tough. Im not much of a one for walking through farmyards although this landowner is reportedly happy enough to let visitors onto his land, less so, I suspect if Id driven into his yard and knocked on his door at 5 a.m. this morning. I opted to park on the roadside at the start of the track, north-west of the pillar. It was a gentle climb south along the top of the hill until I was adjacent to the pillar and then a drop down through three fields to the pillar in the corner of the fourth. The pillar is complete and in good condition although the flush bracket is in danger of becoming buried and the brambles may take over the site if not cut back regularly. It was still not really light enough for good photos as Id opted not to use the flash but I took some anyway. There are excellent views over the valley towards Cowhill on the other side of the River Derwent. The climb back up to the track made this OF sweat a bit and I was happy to take a minute or twos rest before carrying on to the next pillar, a quarter of a mile or so to the south-west.
