Visited whilst staying at the Star Castle Hotel for a few days. The tower seems to have had a long and interesting history. Scillywebcam.com has a picture of the tower dating from about 1910, with a conical roof, and notes that ‘The 16th century windmill (one of two) stood here on the highest point of the Garrison until it was rebuilt as a gun tower in 1834. It was converted in the 1870s to a signal station bought by Lloyds in 1872. It was an Admiralty Signal Station during WW 1 and had a Bofors gun mounted on it in WW 2 which was probably when the parapet was built to replace the conical roof’ (http://scillywebcam.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/old-new.html).

Located at centre of St Mary's Garrison, near summit, Garrison Hill, a tump. English Heritage record the tower as a 16th century windmill, rebuilt as a gun tower and converted into a signal station in the 1870s. OS record the bolt as extant; assume it's on roof. Spoke with owners of this holiday let (they live in the house adjacent); they had guests in so couldn't allow access, which is by a ladder from the top balconey. However, lot of work done on the roof several years ago to maintain its integrity so suspect bolt may have gone. Good luck to a future trig hunter. Should be a cut benchmark on this tower, but was unable to locate it. ***Revisited 1 Jul 2022. Spoke with owner again, again no possibility of access, but he said the bolt's extant and located on a stone column on the roof, just off-centre. Standing well back on the green, an edge of the column can just be seen through one of the tower's castellations... as pointed out to me by the owner.
