Parked at the entrance to Coull Farm. Up farm road to first or second gate, into field, into second field then over broken bit of wall protected by sheep gates. Then on to trig & Tump.

With Clochandighter. Enquired at Coull Farm, cottage at far end from main house. Friendly reception and advised on where to park, not obstructing the farm work schedule for that day. Approached on foot from southwest. Through field gate at NR201646, beeline route across cattlefield to another gate at NR202647. Continued northeast up the steep gully which leadsto the summit. Open grazing top. Pillar in good condition

Parked in a Passing Place (again) and discovered the roadside stream by confidently following a deer track and disappearing up to the top of my thighs. It was comedy gold so I chuckled, extracted myself and wandered 500m back down the road to what would have been a better parking place anyway to start my ascent. Next obstacle was a field of barley (for the nearby Kilchoman distillery) which I circumnavigated before finally finding myself on the NW slope. A straightforward yomp up ensued, troubled only by the alpha male bullock amidst a herd of cattle whose challenging stare I avoided whilst giving him and his mates a wide berth. The weather had cheered up by now so the views were really quite fab. I retraced my steps to the warmth of the motorhome having created a minor stampede despite my best efforts to avoid the hairy herd. On to what would be the last but best trig of the day at Cnoc Uamh nam Fear.......

Spoke with farmer at Coull Farm, permission readily given. Pleasant walk up W ridge, came down SW route - slightly more direct and considerably steeper. Pillar in good condition; original cap in place, raised lettering; 1 sight hole open. Extensive 360deg views, especially along W coastline.

Had just been to Kilchoman Chapel and rest of party were headed to beach at Machir Bay. Approached up track by cottage but easier to come straight down to road at Coull farm track junction.

North sight open and raised but worn lettering on the cap. Good all round coastal views - particularly Machir bay to the south... cool wee sobering stroll after my first visit to Kilchoman Distillery... also scared some bird of prey en route up.

Cnoc Mor ..neat coastal views.

I visited this diminutive hill as part of an excellent day walk taking in the west coast of Islay. After following the coast path from Kilchiaran behind the radar station and then walking along the stunning beach of Machir Bay, I then cut across farmland on a straight line to the trig pillar. Up there I had good views south over the Rhinns of Islay and also, beyond, to the north coast of Ireland. Across to the east I hear the calls of a giant flock of geese over Loch Gorm nearly a mile away. It was a great trig to start the day with and the next one, Cnoc Uamh nam Fear, would be even better.
