Was tempted to walk to this from Claypit Hill but ultimately chose to drive to the farm entrance to the south west and walk up from there. Woodland path was wide enough that the path wasn't overgrown by the tall nettles all along it. Lots of colourful butterflies and meadow flowers spotted in the fallow strip next to the recently harvested crop field that adjoin the circle. The circle itself is full of long grass, not tall enough to obscure the pillar in the middle. A pretty walk up, and some decent 360 degree views from the pillar.

Parked at wide lane entrance at north west of village of Codford St Mary where footpath heads uphill to north east. Wooded for about 800/900 metres. Wanted to get over more to the east but no obvious route. Best option would be to stay on the path until it reaches open fields. Continue along path until field boundary then head east for a couple of hundred metres. Circle is a fairly obvious feature on the higher ground. Once at the rim, pillar comes into view in the centre of the circle. Cutting across the field lower down not such a good plan. Good views all around although a bit misty for distant views at the time. No cap.

On a circular walk from the Codford villages where I noticed many bygone businesses as indicated by the names of cottages eg: Old Saddlery, Old Coach House, Old Bakery, Old Post-Office, Old Schoolhouse etc. Then noticed that its only pub (The George) has recently closed. How times have changed - not even a shop now, but there is a theatre! Codford Circle is a fascinating place; not obviously an Iron Age hillfort with its low trajectory, but probably of that time. Consists of bank & external ditch, and is a little over 8 acres. Pillar set in the middle of the circle; open cap.

Convenient parking at the start of the access road to East Codford Farm on the Codford-Chiterne minor road. Access is gained via an ancient path bearing NE, leaving the path after approx 900m to cross a large arable field to gain Codford Circle and the trig. Field was stubble, the disappearing frost making the field soft, but not too muddy today. At something approaching 250m in diameter, Codford Circle is suprisingly large, not a defensive position as the hill top is very flat and besides the earthworks are too low to lend themselves to being defended. An ancient enclosure nonetheless, perhaps a religious or ceremonial site? The pillar is in good condition other than no cap or plug; the FB is painted white; 2 sight holes definitely open, unsure of the other 2, but they may be sealed. Very good 360 deg views, slightly obscured to the south by a line of trees just off the hill summit.

I parked at the start of the bridleway, south west of the T/P. It was a steady climb up to the field boundary which I followed south east to the circular earthworks. A good job nobody was about. It was then an easy walk to the pillar in the centre. The pillar has a small chip on one corner and the plug is missing but apart from that, it’s in good condition. You can see for miles in all directions but for all that, the view is fairly ‘ordinary’.
