Parked at Clesketts Nature Reserve Car Park and walked up Cold Fell via Howgill then grassy track which later continues as a path all the way to the summit but its quite squelchy and peaty in parts. Returned by following fence line down over Brown Hill and again a faint path along south side of fence then via Forest Head and path along former railway track bed.

A short 5 mile walk passing several curricks, whom I gift this pillar too. It is a Cumbrian word for cairn.....somewhat taller and more uniform, same purpose for guiding travellers.

Superb views on a sunny, clear, cold day.. snow on the lakeland fells and Cross Fell peaks. The summit looks like a prehistoric cairn... the peat level has built up around it, but not on it (as heather can't grow on rock), so it is now in a bowl. These summit cairns are usually assumed to be neolithic, around 3000BC, but there's not enough evidence to be definite. Clearly it was built before the peat formed about 2000yr ago.
